Kayaking, Hiking and Ice Climbing
The fun has continued on our tour through New Zealand. We've been on the south island the past week. The ferry ride from Wellington (north island) to Picton (south island) was a bit choppy but since then the weather has been pretty good.
The highlights of our last week have been a two-day kayaking and hiking trip through the Abel Tasman National Park, which has a beautiful coast line, as well as ice climbing on the Franz Josef Glacier. As in the last post, it is easier to describe the details of these activities through photos.
Sun dial at the Botannical Garden in Wellington - Do you like Klas's pose? This sun dial was unique to us but worked well. You have to stand at the date indicated on this loop with your back facing the sun and put your hands up in the sky. Then the shadow indicated the time of day. Guess what time it was here.
Kayaking along the coast of the Abel Tasman National Park (N.P.)
We stayed on a boat in the Abel Tasman N.P. It was pretty crammed as you can see. Our bed was in the bottom in the far right corner. We had a really fun time as there was an Irish guy on the boat who could sing and play the guitar. The people camping on the shore wished they were on the boat with us as they could hear the music and all of us singing into the night.

This is the view that we woke up to in the morning. The sea was calm and the beach was quiet. It was very peaceful.

Then we learned how to climb on the ice. This wall was approximately 12 metres high.

Now we are in Queenstown preparing for our 4-day hike on the Milford Track next week. We'll let you know how it goes...

Holy cow! I really really don't think I could have been brave enough to climb the glacier. I'm so proud of you guys!!! Wow. I'm impressed. Miss you!!
Hey there outdoor life guys. I must say that the last few post, meaning since thailand, it looks like it has been the best part of this trip. at least adventurous (sp?), or am I wrong!?
Pelle and I just talked about you tonight and that it is over a year since you quit your jobs and just about a year since you left Chicago! It is so crazy how time flies!!!
